About this Visualization

"The fisheries sector requires the definition of boundaries at sea for statistical data-gathering, fisheries management and jurisdictional purposes. FAO Major Fishing Areas are arbitrary areas defined for statistical purposes, the boundaries of which were determined in consultation with international fishery agencies on various considerations." (FAO, 2018). These areas are depicted in this visualization to clarify the size and location of different Areas, Sub-areas and Divisions around the world.

If you hover over the globe you can get the Ocean, Area, Sub-area and even the Division name.

About the Data

The shapefiles to map the Fishing Areas were obtained from: FAO, 2014. FAO Statistical Areas for Fishery Purposes. In: FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture Department [online]. Rome. [Cited: September 2017] http://www.fao.org/fishery/area/search/en
